The youth celebration is attended each year by over 500 area students, at no cost, to celebrate the achievements of their peers honoring the legacy of Dr. King. The YMICC will cosponsor and present student residency work (Mime's the Word) at the performance
Mime's the Word Artist Residency (October 2004) - Kim Christman, an AAAC Arts-In-Education Roster Artist will conduct an artist residency with a core group of 25 students that will incorporate the teachings of civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A set piece will be performed at the MLK Youth Awards Celebration in January 2005. The residency will integrate hammer and lap dulcimers, enabling students to hear and distinguish different sounds and pitches and using what they have learned to add to their set mime piece in the performance.
