The African American Dance Ensemble has a proud history that stretches back to 1959 when artistic director Chuck Davis joined the Klara Harrington Dance Company. Over the years, Chuck's interest in traditional African dance grew. He made several visits to Africa , studying music, dance and song. From this experience he founded the Chuck Davis Dance Company in New York City in 1968. It quickly gained recognition as one of the nation's premier African American Dance Ensembles. Davis , named by the Dance Heritage Coalition to their list of American's Irreplaceable Dance Treasures: the First 100 , will bring programs into schools for workshops and presentations. The workshops can be optionally integrated with other K-12 programs, including In the Spirit of Africa .
