African Heritage Artist Residency
Playwright, author, visual and performing artist April Turner of Life as Art Productions based out of Charlotte, NC will present a week-long artist residency for the C.A.T.C.H. Program . The residency will incorporate African dance and visual arts projects while teaching students varying aspects of African and African American heritage. |
Photography Workshop
Fine Art photographer Jerry Taliaferro will host a photography workshop with students at the YMICC. The project will include a downtown venture where students will photograph Asheville landmarks under the direction of Mr. Taliaferro while the artist instructs students in understanding the photographic processes. The pictures from this workshop will be developed and curated by the artist to display in the Historic YMICC Drugstore Gallery through the end of August. This workshop will be held in conjunction with the Women of a New Tribe exhibit of Mr. Taliaferro's photographs at the YMICC.

The YMICC presents Folkmoot , an annual festival celebrating international dance, through which dance troupes from as many as two dozen nations visit Western North Carolina for performances and audience participation exhibits. The YMICC is one of a half a dozen regional co-hosts of Folkmoot. In 2003, a dance troupe from Chile performed at the Diana Wortham Theater , a partner of the YMICC, before 300 school children. The YMICC hopes to continue the traditions by presenting another foreign company (TBA). |
Puppet-Making Workshop and Performance
Renowned puppeteer Schroeder Cherry , formerly of Sesame Street will host a workshop and performance with summer students and teachers in the YMICC Ray Auditorium . This event is presented in partnership with the Puppetry Alliance and their Puppets on the Ridge Festival. Mr. Schroeder will present the story of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad , teaching African American heritage through puppets.

Clay Workshop
Local artist and featured exhibitor Viola Spells will host a clay workshop for summer students. She will guide students through the artistic process and help students form African inspired art pieces to add to the photographic student exhibition.
