Women's History Month Artist-In-Residence (March 2006) - The YMI will present to 1000 students vocalist/percussionist Imani Gonzalez with a multimedia educational experience. Her two-day educational residency will present workshops & lecture demonstrations for student and adult audiences. Imani will introduce traditional world music from the cultures of Asia, West and South Africa , South America and the Caribbean as a tool to understanding the interrelationship of sound, voice and culture. Students will learn song forms drawn from traditions around the world and participate with hand percussion instruments and call-and-response & vocal improvisations. She has performed traditional African music for the Smithsonian Institution and Smithsonian's Folklife Festival in Washington , D.C. , and continues to perform for the World Music Institute in New York City . Imani is a workshop presenter with the Kennedy Center Partners-In-Education National Touring Program and has just published her book DHIMIKI. A public performance will be offered as a special event for YMI's Women's History Month celebration. Target Audience: 1 st -6 th graders; Families.
