(special Children's Kwanzaa Workshop at 10 AM)

The YMI Cultural Center will celebrate Kwanzaa on Friday, December 30 th 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM in the Ray Auditorium at 39 South Market Street in Asheville .

This year's featured artist is Otesha Creative Arts Ensemble from Winston-Salem , NC . In keeping with the spirit of its founders, Otesha Creative Arts Ensemble provides several programs that explore the heritage and culture of African, Modern and Jazz dance. Their mission is to educate, inspire, and uplift our community through cultural dance, music and theatre.

Kwanzaa is a unique African American celebration with focus on the traditional African values of family, community responsibility, commerce and self-improvement. Kwanzaa is neither political nor religious. Kwanzaa means "first fruits of the harvest". Kwanzaa is based on the Nguzo Saba (seven principles), founded in California in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga.

The event accepts donations, $3.00 per person, to support the YMICC's Outreach Programs.
