An Unmarked Trail highlights the goals for 11th-grade American History students in North Carolina. More often, these goals are viewed through the eyes of the European-American majority population, who left a marked trail of their presence with journals, memoirs, wills, property deeds, land grants, bequests, monuments and more.
But what of those whose footprints left an unmarked trail whose stories were rarely written down? American history is more complete and complex when the goals are looked at through the life experience of diverse communities. Central to the story of Buncombe County are those of African-Americans who made great contributions despite great hardship: who nurtured family and community despite every obstacle. What are the stories of African-Americans who left their imprint on life and culture here in our mountain home? |
