5.1 Elaborate on political conditions in the decade preceding the Civil War. Newspaper articles convey the intense discussion that was swirling in the North and the South prior to the Civil War. Articles included addresses that had been delivered by legislators, legislation that was passed to control the movement of slaves, reports on the influence of free blacks on those that were enslaved, and reports that created a cycle of fear for whites causing them to tighten their control over blacks throughout the region. |
